The Venice Project

Can he do it again? Niklas Zennstrom is according to an article in Businessweek working together with Janus Friis on a new project. This time it is software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web according to the article. As their previous projects, Kazaa and Skype, this one is also supposed to be based on peer-to-peer file sharing. I have to admit that I am fascinated by their energy. How they attack old fashion industries, one after another. First they revolutionized music downloading, which still is a topic of discussion world wide. After that they made phone calls free between computers and cheap to landlines all over the world. I am not surprised at all that they now go for the tv industry. The question is what they will do. We already have sharing of clips through and Apple has successfully started to distribute tv shows via Itunes store. Probably they will go for video-on-demand, making buying of movies via Internet easier and better.

When they released Skype it was not the first software for calls over IP, but it was the most simple one to use and with good speech quality. I am sure they can do the same when it comes to video broadcasting but it will be tough.
